"You Can Write Characters Readers and Editors Love ... and Love To Hate"

  • You want to write characters for your novels or short stories that readers love. You want to make your readers laugh...and you want to make them cry.

  • You want editors to clamor for your characters, and stories about them.

  • You want the folks you create to breathe, to live, to drag you into the story you're writing and make writing fun, and make the story live with them

  • And you want to learn how to do that today. Easily. Without headaches. If it could be fun, that would be a real bonus.

But somewhere along the way, these boring, lifeless people started showing up in your stories, and after thirty pages or so, you were ready to torch them and the pages you wrote them on.

If You Know The Right Questions,
You Can Bring Them To Life

In Holly Lisle's Create A Character Clinic, you'll learn to:

  • Write characters who are fascinating and believable

  • Give your characters compelling needs that resonate with readers

  • Use the seven critical areas of character development to prevent "cardboard characters" and address areas of your characters' lives you've never considered before

  • Develop your characters' individual voices, making each immediately recognizable from all the rest

  • Discover three unique ways of presenting your character to your reader throughout the story, and use each to your story's best benefit

  • Avoid fifteen huge sins writers commit with their characters, or better yet, use them so well they surprise, excite, and delight your readers

  • And much more

Folks who use my system say:

"When Holly Lisle drafts a clinic for aspiring writers, she does it using her unique style and voice. She doesn't apply any routine template like the authors of other "how to" books. Holly brings in a relaxed style and voice, personalizing her clinic in a way I've never seen another author achieve. Create A Character Clinic: A Step-by-Step Course for the Fiction Writer is the first of several clinics Holly is drafting for writers. The only way to make this clinic more personalized would be for Holly to sit physically with each reader while teaching the class, and most of us could not afford to pay her enough to do this."

Jean Schara, reviewing for FMWriters.com Vision E-Zine

And...

"Lisle's writing and instructional style is clear and easy to follow. She is able to draw the reader in and make them feel a part of the process -- a collaborator rather than a student. Create a Character Clinic takes pride of place on my desk as an essential, practical guide through one of the most difficult parts of writing, for me, at least. I strongly recommend Create a Character Clinic as a necessary part of a writer's library."

Carter Nipper, CarterNipper.com

And...

"As you know, I swear by Holly Lisle's Create A Character Clinic. I use it as the second stage in my character-building process."

You Can Do This

In Create A Character Clinic, I show you, not just how to develop a character, but how to write your characters in a compelling fashion once you come up with them.

There are all sorts of books that will tell you how to put together interesting characteristics, with character backstory, with powerful motivations, and all the other things well-written characters need.

I have yet to find one, however, that takes the characteristics you've come up with and shows you how to apply them in such a way that your character lives and breathes on the page.

That's what I do.

My system is simple, and step-by-step. I break it down into steps and techniques you can start following immediately. I'll show you what I do, and then take you through doing it yourself.

And I keep it short---you shouldn't have to wade through tons of words to find the few kernels of useful knowledge that you can start applying to your own work.

So that you can start using it right away, this book is divided into three sections.

  • Section One is Ask Them Anything---I explain, and then demonstrate, each of seven critical areas of character development, along with giving you printable charts offering questions that will give you a well-rounded framework for your characters. Answer as few or as many questions as you need to get a feel for the people you'll be writing about, and ask (and answer) more as you work through your story and need new twists and turns.

  • Section Two is Bring Them To Life---A tutorial on how to put all the information you've developed into creating people who live on the page.

  • Section Three is The Sins of Characterization (And How to Commit Them Right)---Believe it or not, almost everything you can ever do wrong in putting characters on the page, you can also do right. Here I show you when a writing sin can be a virtue, and vice-versa.

All three sections include demonstrations of both unpublishable and publishable approaches to techniques and problems, and exercises that allow you to put what you've learned into practice.

I want to make this as close as I can to me reading over your shoulder, looking at what you've done, and saying, "Okay. Here's what you can try next to get that character moving."

This Character-Creation System Includes:

  • The complete workshop on the Seven Critical Areas of Character Development

  • Printable character development charts

  • Six Essential Bring Them To Life exercises and examples

  • The Fifteen Unforgiveable Sins of Characterization (and how to commit them right)
    • The Core Dump
    • Dust and Cobwebs
    • Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
    • Behemoth
    • Superman vs. The Gremlin
    • The As You Know, Bob
    • Headless Horsemen
    • Coffee and a Bagel
    • Seltzer
    • Elephant at the Tea Party
    • The Ben Franklin
    • The Snowman
    • Door, Two Guns, No Ammo
    • Naked Chick at the Opera
    • The Brain Transplant
