Selling Your Book on Shop.HollyLisle.Com
The Shop.HollyLisle.Com web store invites the submission of e-books or proposals by both published and unpublished writers.
Please note that since my name is on the store, and any book in the store is by inference and fact a book I recommend, I am very picky about the books I accept.
TO SELL YOUR WORK ON SHOP.HOLLYLISLE.COM:
-
You must be copyright holder for the work you submit. I will not under any circumstances accept books by anyone but the author or, in cases of collaboration, authors.
-
You are the publisher of your book as well as the author, and you carry all the rights and responsibilities of both publisher and author. My role is as shopkeep and marketer.
-
You may sell your work on other sites that also claim non-exclusive rights to the work. If you decide to sell your book someplace that claims exclusive rights, you agree to let me know right away so that I can take the book off of my site to avoid being in breach of your contract.
-
I pay a 60% commission (also called a royalty) on the sale price of works with a cover price of under $8.00, and an 80% commission (also called a royalty) on the sale price of works with a cover price of $8.00 or more.
-
Sale price is different than cover price for the following reasons: PayPal charges a fee to process orders. That fee is subtracted from cover price. Some books are sold through affiliate sales, and the affiliate's commission, if there is one, is also subtracted from the cover price. If you decide you want to offer a discount on your book one month (a special coupon sale for visitors to your web site, or an across-the-board 10% discount, or something similar), I will set it up for you. The discount will be subtracted from the cover price. The amount that remains is the sale price.
-
I pay every month via PayPal, and I do not have a lower limit to the amount of money I'll pay you. If you have money in your account, I'll send it.
-
You will have a private, constantly-updated author page that will let you know exactly how many copies you have sold, the sale price of each, which have sold through affiliates, and a running tally of the amount of money you have due at the end of the month.
-
If you also offer a print copy of your book on Lulu.com (or another POD publisher), I will link to your print book from your e-book for you, so long as you are not offering a competing e-book on the POD site. I make no money from your POD sales---this link is simply a courtesy on my part. I'd appreciate a link back from your POD author page to your e-book author page to assist in marketing your e-book, but don't require such a link.
-
Currently, all books will be presented in Adobe Acrobat format. Faint interest has been expressed in having them available in other formats. If the interest becomes more than faint, we'll look into adding other formats.
IF YOUR BOOK IS ALREADY PUBLISHED ELSEWHERE:
-
If your book is already published elsewhere and you're inquiring about putting it in my store, write to me and tell me you want to send me your book. Describe your book in 250 words or less. If it sounds like it would fit my interests, I'll request a copy of the published e-book to read. Currently, I'm willing to look at:
-
Nonfiction of interest to writers.
Include your qualifications for writing the book in your first e-mail.
-
Fiction that tells a good story.
Stories include: a beginning, a middle, and an end; conflict, change, and resolution. Stories have characters. The characters are distinct from each other. Events happen, and have meaning within the context of the story.
If your work fits the preceding description, I'll take a look.
All genres, cross-genres, etc., are welcome.
Content cannot be X-rated, but R-rated work is acceptable.
-
I have no interest in experimental fiction. I don't like it, and therefore cannot recommend it. Deconstruction, word art, metafiction, etc., will be rejected.
-
I will not consider pornography.
- I require a professional-looking cover. I do not promise that I will find your cover for your already-published book acceptable. I have seen some horrible cover art for sale out there. If you have the graphic-arts skills to create a good cover, or want to hire someone to create one for you, that's fine. I charge $15 (which comes out of your first month's sales) to design one if the one you submit is not acceptable, and if you agree in writing to have me do one. Examples of covers I've designed are Create A Language Clinic, Create A Character Clinic, Way of the Cheetah, Horses For Writers, and 2YN. You will own the cover upon payment.
IF YOUR BOOK IS NOT FINISHED, OR NOT PUBLISHED ELSEWHERE:
-
NONFICTION
Query with a sample Table of Contents and 250-WORD (or less) proposal. Also, include your qualifications for writing the book.
Have your first three chapters ready to go before you query---if I'm interested I'll ask for them in my return e-mail, and have you send them to me by return e-mail.
Word .doc format or .RTF format.
-
FICTION
Query with a 250-WORD (or less) synopsis. Also tell me about yourself.
Have your first three chapters ready to go before you query---if I'm interested I'll ask for them in my return e-mail, and have you send them to me by return e-mail.
Word .doc format or .RTF format.
